I spent the early years of my working life as a higher education lecturer in the social sciences, with a particular interest in mental health issues. Mid-career I left this post and set up my own business which I then ran for several years. 10 years ago I experienced a viral infection in the brain which has left me with a substantial weakness in one arm and one leg. This has resulted in me requiring a walking stick when outside the house, along with a fatigue syndrome which sometimes affects me. I am open-minded, always keen to try new activities and interested in a wide range of issues such as the environment and climate change. Before becoming disabled I was involved in a number of sports from sailing to paragliding and retain an interest in them - although now am unable to participate directly. I have a considerable interest in the natural world, and now take pleasure in birdwatching.
